MEMS+ 5.0 NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH EUROPRACTICE
 

The MEMS+ 5.0 release from Coventor includes an expanded component library to enable modeling a greater variety of MEMS devices, with a particular focus on the unique challenges of micro-mirrors and piezo-electric devices.

Expanded component library   Enhancements to the component library include:

New capabilities to create and export non-linear ROMs   A new Reduced Order Model (ROM) generation interface gives users additional control over the mechanical and electrical nonlinearities to be included in the ROM.

COVENTORWARE 2014 NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH EUROPRACTICE

The CoventorWare 2014 release features substantial performance improvements, ease-of-use enhancements, and an extended Python scripting interface.

Coventor have significantly improved the performance of MemElectro and CoSolveEM, with large meshes running as much as 5X faster. The performance of MemMech on modal harmonic analysis of piezo resonators is dramatically improved, running more than 100X faster. And, the scripting interface has been extended to support material property and mesh transforms, allowing automation of parametric design studies.

In addition, there are many minor enhancements and bug fixes that have improved the usability and robustness of the product.

ATRENTA BUGSCOPE ADDED TO EUROPRACTICE PORTFOLIO

The Microelectronics Support Centre is pleased to announce the availability of Atrenta BugScope which provides an automated way to generate assertions capturing the IP design intent and the IP level testbench intent. MENTOR GRAPHICS OLYMPUS-SOC AND CALIBRE INFORMATION DAY, 10 APRIL, MUNICH

The Microelectronics Support Centre at STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Mentor Graphics are pleased to invite you to an information day on 10 April 2014 at Mentor Graphics’ Offices in Munich. The information day will explain how Olympus-SoC and Calibre can be used to realise IC designs at advanced nodes such as the GlobalFoundries 28nm CMOS process which is soon to become available via Europractice. Product specialists will showcase the capabilities of the Olympus-SoC physical implementation platform and its integration with the Calibre verification platform.

Together Olympus-SoC and Calibre enable designers to meet the challenges of design for manufacturability and low-power while delivering high quality layouts, fast turnaround, and rapid closure. This event is highly relevant to anyone working or considering working in Digital IC design and targeting an advanced process node.

INTELLISUITE V8.8 NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH EUROPRACTICE

The Microelectronics Support Centre is pleased to announce that IntelliSuite V8.8 is now available through Europractice. IntelliSuite V8.8 contains new features in many of the modules such as:

  • New featuires have been added to Blueprint giving the user more control of their design such as the ability to control the roundness/sharpness of entity corners.
  • New meshing features allow users to automatically remesh their models in 3DBuilder for enhanced connectivity.
  • The new 64-bit Hexpresso is able to allocate more memory during mesh calculations. This enables users to use the Hexpresso engine with larger, more complex models.
  • IntelliSense now provide a special callibration tool to help users calibrate Recipe for their own devices and conditions.

    COVENTOR MEMS+ 4.0 NOW AVAILABLE

    MEMS+ 4.0 is a full 64-bit implementation allowing users to capture and simulate larger, more detailed models of MEMS devices. MEMS+ 4.0 includes:

    New Verilog-A Export Capability
    MEMS+ 4.0 can automatically generate and export reduced order models (ROMs) in the popular Verilog-A format. These exported models typically simulate 100X faster than full MEMS+ models and are compatible with most commercial analog/mixed-signal circuit simulators. Ideally suited to simulating nominal behavior of MEMS sensors and resonators, these automatically generated models simulate just as fast as hand crafted models while capturing more behavioral complexity.

    New Modeling Options
    MEMS+ 4.0 also delivers more modeling options to address a wider range of device design challenges, including:

    • New options for specifying finger length of curved combs (useful for gyros),
    • Option to selectively include/exclude fringing fields for in-plane displacement relative to top/bottom electrodes (accuracy vs. speed tradeoff),
    • New package import options to specify out-of-plane angle and length scale, and
    • New MATLAB scripting interface to save reaction forces and moments at internal connectors for verification purposes.

    EUROPRACTICE LIME MICROSYSTEMS PARTNERSHIP

    The Microelectronics Support Centre is pleased to introduce members to a highly flexible programmable RF chip for research and teaching of wireless technology from Lime Microsystems.

    Lime Microsystems has developed a highly flexible programmable single-chip wireless transceiver.  This field programmable radio frequency device (FPRF) is highly programmable and using its comprehensive on-chip capability users can implement complex systems quickly and easily.  The FPRF chip is also available on a low-cost development board which can be optionally connected to both Altera and Xilinx development boards to enable an even greater range of systems to be developed.

    COVENTOR SEMULATOR3D 2013 NOW AVAILABLE

    SEMulator3D 2013 is a major release and includes significant performance improvements, and defect fixes throughout the product.

    The new Materials Editor allows hierarchical grouping of materials to arbitrary depth. This new feature allows users to define process behavior relative to material groups, greatly simplifying process deck development and maintenance. It also allows the user to define default visibility and transparency settings on a per-material basis. Visibility and transparency settings are transferred to the .zam file when a model is built and are applied to the 3D model in the SEMulator3D Viewer. The default set of top-level material groups includes Oxides, Nitridies, Silicon (ie, active), Metals and Organics.

    The default material database that is included with SEMulator3D has been updated to include more materials and more realistic material names. These default materials are grouped into a useful, consistent hierarchy.

    SEMulator3D 2013 is supported on Windows 7, 64-bit and on Red Hat Enterprise 5 and 6, 64-bit. A new license file is required to run this release.

    COVENTOR MEMS+ 3.1 NOW AVAILABLE

    MEMS+3.1 is a full update of MEMS+ 3.0 that features significant improvements to the documentation, new MATLAB scripting capabilities and important bug fixes.

    This update is available for all platforms supported by MEMS+ 3.0. MEMS+ 3.1 can be installed regardless of whether MEMS+ 3.0 is installed on a system. If MEMS+ 3.0 is already installed, MEMS+ 3.1 installs over it. It is not necessary to obtain a new license file to run this update.

    COVENTOR/EUROPRACTICE WEBINAR EVENT

    The Microelectronics Support Centre at STFC/RAL is pleased to bring you news of a 90 minute Coventor/EUROPRACTICE Webinar event on Monday 25th February where you can learn about the Coventor design solutions for MEMS and how these can be acquired via EUROPRACTICE.

    Coventor provides automated design solutions for Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS).  Coventor offers tools for the complete MEMS product development team, including process engineers, MEMS device designers, IC integration engineers and system architects.

    The Webinar will first cover MEMS design using MEMS+ and CoventorWare. MEMS+ provides designers with a common platform for device and MEMS+IC design, integrating directly with MATLAB & Simulink™ from Mathworks and Cadence Virtuoso.  CoventorWare includes a solid modelling suite integrated with field solvers to provide comprehensive coverage of MEMS-specific multi-physics, e.g. electrostatics, electro-mechanics, piezoelectric, and damping. Finally the Webinar will review Coventor’s process modelling tool, SEMulator3D.

    NEW HARDWARE ADDED TO EUROPRACTICE PORTFOLIO

    COVENTORWARE 2012.001 UPDATE NOW AVAILABLE
    CoventorWare 2012.001 is a partial update to the CoventorWare 2012.000 release. It contains significant improvements to the Preprocessor and Analyzer. Most notably, this update includes new options for specifying pre-stress in the MemMech Advanced Settings file, more accurate reporting of contact force and area by MemMech, a new table of inertia coefficients in MemMech results, and a new option in the Preprocessor to automatically transfer attributes from one meshed model to another. This update is available for all platforms supported by CoventorWare 2012.000. It can be installed only on top of the CoventorWare 2012.000 release. It is not necessary to obtain a new license to run this update.

    CADENCE ENCOUNTER 3D-IC OPTION NOW AVAILABLE

    The Microelectronics Support Centre is very pleased to announce restricted access to Cadence 3D-IC functionality for IC and Combined (IC and Systems) Package users.

    The Cadence Encounter 3D-IC technology enables digital IC implementation across multiple die, utilizing through-silicon vias (TSVs) and micro-bump bonding techniques.  For full details please see our Cadence pages.

    INTRODUCION OF LOWER COST EUROPRACTICE SYNOPSYS CLASSROOM TEACHING LICENSES AND ENHANCED SYNOPSYS CURRICULUM MATERIALS

    The Microelectronics Support Centre is pleased to announce the introduction of lower cost EUROPRACTICE Synopsys Classroom Teaching Licenses and enhanced Synopsys Curriculum Materials.

    EUROPRACTICE Synopsys Classroom Teaching licenses are made available for the teaching and instruction of students in cases where the University has too few regular EUROPRACTICE non-commercial research and training licenses for mass-class teaching. The Synopsys Classroom Teaching licenses have the same functionality as regular EUROPRACTICE Synopsys non-commercial research and training licenses but are made available at lower cost since use is restricted to teaching only and no research use of any sort is allowed.     The Microelectronics Support Centre would also like to remind members of Synopsys’ range of Curriculum Materials and Generic ASIC design kits.  Synopsys' Curriculum materials and Generic Design Kits can be used to implement new courses or to supplement existing undergraduate and masters courses. These materials range from whole semester courses to shorter specific technical presentations while the Generic Design Kits are based on typical ASIC processes and offer rich functionality that is ideal for teaching ASIC design principles with Synopsys’ tools.     CADENCE VIRTUAL SYSTEM PLATFORM OPTION NOW AVAILABLE

    The Virtual System Platform Option adds new functionality to Cadence’s Incisive suite of tools that allows the development of TLM Virtual Platforms. Virtual Platforms enable pre- RTL software development, functional verification, and system analysis and optimization before committing to hardware micro-architecture. VSP automates the process of creating a virtual prototype, debugging software with a virtual prototype, and deploying the virtual prototype to the software team. VSP relies on fast processor models, which provide the high-performance execution speed required for an effective software development solution. VSP supports ARM Fast Models and Imperas fast processor models (ARC, MIPS, etc.), to provide hundreds of millions of software instructions per second execution and lock-step software and hardware debugging.

    CADENCE 2011/2012 RELEASE NOW AVAILABLE

    The Microelectronics Support Centre at STFC/RAL has e-mailed details of the 2011/2012 Cadence update to the EUROPRACTICE Representatives at Cadence/EUROPRACTICE user sites. The e-mail explained how to get access to the new tools releases plus the optional packages, as well as delivering updated keys valid to 31 December 2011. Individuals should contact their EUROPRACTICE Representative for access to upgraded Cadence tools and licenses.

    XILINX-ATLYS DEVELOPMENT BOARD NOW AVAILABLE

    ATLYS is a complete, ready-to-use digital circuit development platform based on a Xilinx Spartan 6 LX45 FPGA. The on-board collection of high-end peripherals, including 128Mbyte DDR2 DRAM, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI Video, and AC97 audio make the ATLYS board an ideal host for complete digital systems built around the Xilinx MicroBlaze embedded processor

    SEMulator3D 2011 NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH EUROPRACTICE

    SEMulator3D 2011 features much faster parallel model building (3-4X faster in many cases), all-new mesh generation, several new modeling steps, and many usability enhancements.

    Highlights

    Please note, MEMulator no longer exists as a separate product, but all MEMS-specific functionality has been combined with SEMulator3D, and SEMulator3D is now appropriate for modeling either MEMS or semiconductor process flows.

    NEW 3D RING RESONATOR MODULE NOW INCLUDED WITH PHOENIX OPTICS LITE AND OPTICS ADVANCED

    Europractice and PhoeniX are pleased to announce that a 3D Ring resonator module has been added to the Optics Lite and Optics Advanced bundles at no additional cost.

    Based on the full vectorial Coupled Mode Theory, this new add-on module to FieldDesigner is a fast and accurate alternative to 3D FDTD in simulating ring resonators.

    In the design of ring resonator structures, the coupling constant in the directional couplers is one of the main design parameters. Since one or both of the involved waveguides are curved, standard coupled mode theory or a simple system mode calculation is not applicable. One would have to resort to methods like FDTD, which can be computationally very expensive. Especially since the structures used in ring resonators are often essentially three-dimensional, thus needing 3D FDTD.

    The PhoeniX solution applies 3D Coupled Mode Theory on combinations of curved and bent waveguides. Multiple modes from each waveguide can be used at the same time, and polarization effects - such as polarization conversion during the coupling - are taken into account. This simulation tool enables the calculation of the full scattering matrix of the couplers involved, at a fraction of the computational cost that FDTD simulations would require. It is embedded in PhoeniX's FieldDesigner environment, giving the user full control over which modal fields to take into account.

    EUROPRACTICE/INTELLISENSE FREE 2 DAY HANDS-ON TRAINING EVENT, RUTHERFORD APPLETON LABORATORY, 19-20 APRIL 2011

    Following the successful Training Event at the Universite Catholique de Louvain in October 2010, the Microelectronics Support Centre at RAL is pleased to announce a further Free IntelliSense Hands-on Training Event to be held at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory UK, 19-20 April 2011. The training is open to staff and research students at all EUROPRACTICE member institutions, be they existing IntelliSuite tools users or those who may be considering using IntelliSuite in the future.

    This 2-day Training Event will comprise of lectures by IntelliSense Engineers plus hands-on practical sessions, and is an excellent opportunity to learn about and experience the IntelliSense MEMS design tools.

    CADENCE TRANSACTION LEVEL MODELLING (TLM) PACKAGE NOW AVAILABLE

    The Microelectronics Support Centre at RAL is pleased to announce a new mainstream package in its Cadence portfolio, the Transaction Level Modelling (TLM) package. This package combines Cadence's front end tools for high level modelling, formal verification and synthesis, without the added expense of, for example, the physical IC implementation tools. As such, it is ideal for Europractice members who are new to Cadence, and who would like to use Cadence's high-level synthesis, formal verification and front-end logic design tools, for example in an FPGA development flow.

    COVENTOR MEMS+ 2.0 NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH EUROPRACTICE

    MEMS+ 2.0 provides a standard methodology for modeling MEMS devices and simulating them together with control electronics within Cadence Virtuoso (part of the Cadence IC package). MEMS+ provides MEMS and IC designers with a common platform for MEMS+IC design, MEMS+IC simulation, and MEMS+IC product development.

    MEMS+ 2.0 comes with an extensive library of 3D MEMS building blocks to enable a wide variety of MEMS-based applications with new enhancements for designing and simulating the flexible structures that occur in inertial sensors, microphones and energy harvesting devices. Additional features in the tool's user interface improve the ease of design creation and re-use.

    Features in MEMS+ 2.0

    MEMS+ 2.0 is available now on Windows 32 and 64 bit OS as well as Linux. The latest release of MEMS+ improves simulation speed in the Cadence Spectre and UltraSim simulators by up to 10x, and now supports simulations in the 64-bit versions of those simulators as well as the 32-bit versions.

    NEW 2D EIGEN MODE SIMULATOR NOW INCLUDED WITH PHOENIX OPTICS LITE AND OPTICS ADVANCED

    Europractice and PhoeniX are pleased to announce that a 2D Eigen Mode Expansion (EME) simulator has been added to the Optics Lite and Optics Advanced bundles at no additional cost.

    Bi-directional simulation of light propagation based on Eigen Mode Expansion is an innovative technique which allows you to model a very wide range of structures with a level of accuracy that methods such as FDTD or BPM cannot attain. Some useful features of EME are:
    * It is fully bi-directional; all reflections are taken into account in the method.
    * It is a fully vectorial algorithm, making no approximations about the light polarisation.
    * It is a rigorous solution to Maxwell's Equations; the main approximation being the finite number of modes used.

    3D BPM CAPABILITY NOW INCLUDED IN PHOENIX OPTODESIGNER

    The Europractice Software Service at RAL are pleased to announce that a full vectorial beam propagation method simulator has been added to OptoDesigner.

    This 3D BPM capability is based on a novel implementation of a Fixed-grid Finite Element numerical engine. The benefit of this method is the increased simulation speed while obtaining the same accuracy as with the common Finite Difference implementations of other simulators. This new algorithm delivers high potential especially for small features and disturbances.

    The 3D BPM module is available in OptoDesigner, the integrated layout and propagation simulation solution from PhoeniX. Existing customers with a service support contract can download the latest version of OptoDesigner and gain full access to this new functionality.
